When you commit a wrong, do you run to those who will lovingly rebuke you or to those who ignorantly approve you?
Where you run is important.
The fact that you run is even more important, but that’s for another day.
But, where you run is important because it reveals your heart.
Wronging someone or yourself should breed discomfort. It should make you deeply unsettled.
And the discomfort it brings is comforted only by more discomfort. Not the comfort of approval from immature advisors who pardon your behavior. (That’s a lot of comfort, discomfort…lol)
I’ve been learning to run to the righteous.
There are people in my life who are extremely loyal, but more so righteous.
They stand on the banks of justice, even if I’m on the other side of the river.
They won’t swim to me.
And that’s what I need.
My favorite book of the Bible is Proverbs, and it houses this gem:
“Wounds from a friend can be trusted…”
A true friend hurts you with the
truth.
They correct you, chastise you and love you back to health.
If you’re living reckless for long periods of time on end, first question your heart and then those you consider to be friends.
A healthy heart won’t continuously do the same wrongs, and healthy friends don’t let you drown in them.
They show them to you and help lift you out of it.
So, identify the righteous in your life.
Run to them when you are doing wrong.
Seek wise counsel and follow God’s wisdom.
Staying sullied in the mess of your wrongdoing is no bueno and bad friends will keep you in the mess.
I pray you find good friends. But even more importantly, I pray you be a good friend.
Hope this helps!
